Billy Yellow

Billy Yellow pictured here in the black hat in 2003 is also the man in the red headband in the "show you how we do it" Healing Ceremony in 1958

In 2003 after I'd spent a couple of months in Monument Valley researching Earl's photographs, someone told me that one of the men in the photos was Billy Yellow. Billy, known throughout the Navajo Nation as a spiritual leader, had been a guide for John Wayne and John Ford when they filmed westerns in Monument Valley during the 1940s and 50s. My friend and photographer, Dennis Thomann, took this photo a year before Billy died at 102. Billy was a beloved Singer (shaman/healer) among the Dine'. You can learn more about Billy and even hear him sing "The Morning Spirit Song" on the Earl Waggoner website.
